“But the Democrats have a policy response: they are about to vote on hundreds of billions in new taxes, a regimen of new fines and mandates for businesses, and a takeover of the health-care industry.”

Jennifer Rubin at Commentary on the newest unemployment figures and the health care bill.

An unwieldy bill – of truly gargantuan proportions – hastily and stealthily voted on, in the cover of night, er, I mean, on Saturday or Sunday. Sounds prudent. The very picture of competence. The height of clear thinking, modesty and servant-of-the-people servanting! Why worry? What could possibly go wrong?

Update: HEALTHCARE BILL PASSES HOUSE, 220-215. Elections matter. Well, yeah, kinda. Also, please do read Michael Kennedy’s comment in the comments section, below. (OPS: the comment is posted at chicagoboyz….)

    Yo Madhu,

They may be in kamikaze mode on Health Care anyway. But mind you – it would probably be overturned next year or by 2011/2012.

The problem then is – how many companies will have already started dumping their plans for Medicaid for all by then? Including mine, and they take really good care of us.

What was CBO’s guess? 119 million?

Looks to me the Dems want to look like they are passing healthcare but not actually do it.

I don’t see that getting past the Senate by years end. And Harry Reid is up for re-election in 2010.

    Worst case scenario.

OK. Concierge care is within range for at least one of us. That’d be the wife. Me – I got the VA. And I be healthy.

Mind you, they are now within 6-8 more Dem defections of losing this…and what passes in the Senate will be much scaled back.

Anyone figure out why it takes $1.3 trillion to insure 36 million peeps?

The more I look into this, the more I consult my instincts and experience, the more I see concierge being the back door to privatizing care.

Otherwise ya’ll – med professionals – can go bankrupt, drive a cab or work as lowly paid employees for the 111 Federal and unknown number of NHS’s and mini-NHS’s at the State level.

Which I don’t think you want to do.

Don’t worry, they’ll be a loophole. Congress always takes care of the well heeled, starting with themselves. Then their pals.

We just need to make sure they don’t have some huge penalty for truly private care.

    Boehner says 34 dems opposed.

That takes them to 224 out of 218.

    OK. PRAY.
