I’m completely obsessed with watching old Mary Tyler Moore shows on Hulu. I have a distinct childhood memory of watching the opening credits, complete with hat-throwing ‘Who can turn the world on with a smile’ theme song, and feeling a little shiver run down my spine because I liked the song so much. I can still see, almost perfectly, the square room we used as a den and sometime bedroom for my little brother, a small black and white televison stuck in one corner next to a big window overlooking our backyard. The make-shift den was next to the galley kitchen and meant to be used for a formal dining room, I think, or maybe not because we had room for a table in the kitchen. My seventies memories include grade school, the MTM show, The Bob Newhart show, pet rocks and a big orange comb that had DISCO written on it and that I wore in the back-pocket of my corduroys. I’m not kidding.
(And, look what else I found on the internets: Without a doubt the TV decor that had the most influence on me was Mary Richards’ original studio apartment in The Mary Tyler Moore Show. So, that’s where my love of quirky loft-style apartments comes from – it must have been buried in my subconscious from childhood viewings of MTM! And what a cool blog, eh?)
